Marcus Shelby is an accomplished composer, arranger, bassist, and educator. His dazzling biography includes: Bandleader of Columbia Records; GRP Impulse! Recording Artists Black/Note; and is currently leader of the MSJO, a dynamic big band. You must be there!
Shelby received composing commissions for major works: Soul of the Movement”—a 12 part suite on MLK; and “Harriet Tubman.” He’s also written dance scores for “Bebop Baby”, “Sonny’s Blues”, and others. He’s a Yerba Buena Gardens Festival artist in residence; winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship; teacher at the Stanford Jazz Workshop; and music director of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival.
